The PMP certification will be my first topic. PMP stands for Project Management Professional. PMI Institute offers PMP certification to professionals who meet the PMP eligibility requirements and then pass the PMP certification examination.
Five volunteers working in project management founded PMI (Project Management Institute) in 1969 in Pennsylvania, USA. It took 14 years for them to organize their first symposium, which was held in 1983 in Atlanta, Georgia. The first symposium of PMI was attended by 83 professionals.

The PMI institute was established to help project managers around the globe learn a common language. This was possible by conducting a certification exam, and instructing candidates on a common ground in project management language.
The first PMP certification exam took place at PMI 84 in Philadelphia on October 6, 1984. 43 people passed the exam and became the first Project Management Professionals.

3 Tips to Help Your PM Career Advance

Recently, I was asked to provide 3 tips to help project managers like you grow their careers. It was my goal to gather tips from different sources and compile them into one article. You want to learn how to manage projects and what project managers do. Beyond that, it often comes down the who you are as an individual and how you behave. Let’s start with this: These are three tips to help you advance your PM career.
Flexibility is key. Sometimes the way to the top doesn’t always go straight up. Sometimes you have to move sideways and then up. While you wait for the promotion, others are moving forward. Consider what you can gain from a given opportunity before you dismiss it. It could help you learn more about your industry or company, increase your skills, or strengthen your working relationships. You will be compared with others who are willing to try new things.
Be likeable – It is a skill. You can be liked. You can cultivate the ability to be liked. People are the best way to accomplish project work. People choose to surround themselves only with people they like, even if everything else is equal. If people enjoy working with you, they will go the extra mile to help you. This will result in a greater selection of qualified resources. How? Think before you speak. Be sincere and kind. Respect others around you. Admire others’ leadership qualities.
Be low-maintenance – Ask yourself the following question: “Do I make it easier for my coworkers or make it more difficult? Am I highly valued or high-maintenance?” Ask someone you trust if you don’t know the answer. Napoleon Hill stated, “It is true that you can succeed fastest and best by helping others succeed.” You are serving others, no matter what your title or salary. You are there to serve others when you arrive at the office. Your actions should be a sign of service.
These are just a few ideas of mine. For more, be sure to visit the rest of the ideas.

Three Tips to Set Remote Workers up for Success

Are you looking to add team members to your virtual company? Many of us work remotely. Not everyone likes to work remotely.
In a previous discussion, we discussed how to keep your profile high while working remotely. Let’s now talk about how to set up your remote team members for success.
These guidelines will help you build a team that is successful. Some people prefer to work in an office while others are more comfortable working remotely.
1) Choose self-motivated and disciplined team members. Before you put someone in a position where they can work remotely, make sure they are self-motivated and disciplined. Working remotely presents new distractions. Particularly for workers in a home office. You can surf the internet, make phone calls, and watch television. There are also errands to run. An unorganized worker can easily become disoriented. If you have the chance, ask your team member to start at the office. Check out how they do with specific assignments. Give them due dates and give them autonomy. It is possible that they will have difficulties working remotely if they have difficulty meeting their office goals. However, this does not mean that you can ignore your team members working remotely. No. However, remote workers are less likely than those who work in the office to reach out to them. You want to ensure that you check in with everyone regularly and schedule regular one-on-one meetings and touch base sessions. You don’t want to be someone’s alarm clock or have to remind them of their responsibilities.
2) Build connections. Build relationships between team members who work remotely and those who are in the office. Connection is key to the success of virtual teams. Team members must feel connected to their work, to you, and to each other. Even remote team members need to feel connected. Establish working partnerships or small groups with team members who work in the office as well as remote team members. Every remote worker should have someone to call for information or updates other than you. If the contact is away for extended periods of times or on vacation, make sure there is another person to call. It is possible to create small work groups. Team members who work in the office should be allowed to make time to act as the in-office liaison for remote workers. While some relationships will naturally develop, it is important to provide the right environment for them to flourish.
3) Establish realistic and consistent expectations – This is a common argument from remote workers. They want to ensure that you are aware that they are producing and not slacking. This sounds great, doesn’t it? What can you lose? You lose if your remote worker feels burnt out or that his or her efforts are not being appreciated. It doesn’t mean that remote workers should have to commute. You should set clear goals and deadlines for your team members. Make sure they are reasonable and the same goals and deadlines that you have for remote team members. If you suspect that a remote team member is working too hard, you can encourage them to slow down and remind them that you don’t expect them to work for them.

15 Ways to Get a Gig as Project Manager

Mike Clayton recently answered a question that he often receives from his audience: “How do I get into project managing?”
I enjoyed Mike’s words so I decided to riff on them.
seize opportunities ? Any opportunity. You should take every opportunity to be involved in a project, and then look for more responsibility.
Absolutely Mike. Absolutely Mike.
Definitely.? Both professionally and personally, a lessons learned file is essential.
Keep a list of useful information you have learned. Tips, tricks, tools, insights? Keep it with you
This is probably a good idea for many people. I don’t like to carry around notebooks. Blogging is for me a key way to retain important information and think carefully about it. This, as well as responding to forum questions and posing mine.
Do you need training? Not just project management, but any business, communication, or personal skill. Keep track of what you learn in your notebook.
Training is vital and often overlooked by organizations. Shim wrote an article on the Importance of Coaching and Training to Organizational Growth, which I commented on. Too bad that most companies don’t see the importance of training like the military.
I can produce training for project managers if anyone is interested.
Get qualifications. You won’t be a great PM if you don’t take the time to study and pass exams. But they will help you think more clearly and give you a badge people will recognize.
True.? True.
You must approach these certifications with the right mindset. Yesterday, someone emailed me asking if they could afford thousands of dollars for a training course in CAPM. NO!? Boot camps are a waste of time. They only teach you how to remember and pass a test. If you are okay with that, then you are doing it wrong.
Read insatiably. Project Management magazines like the APM’s Project or Project Manager Today are particularly useful. However, blogs and websites offer a wealth of information, comment, ideas, and formal learning.
Absolutely.? Connect people. You can make people more valuable by connecting them.
Mike, that is a critical point. Leadership is about facilitation and bridging gaps between people to establish and maintain good communications. This doesn’t mean that you are the most important member of the system. You should be the one who makes it run smoothly.
Do not be a prima donna. Do not be a prima donna if you have a simple task. Instead, take on the challenge with the joy of a major challenge and accomplish it well. You will be known as someone who is able to do anything to get things done.
If you are looking for a mentor within your organization, find a project manager to ask if they can give you the simple tasks. Although they may seem simple and boring to them, you can gain valuable experience and insight from taking over these tasks. This will help you improve your people skills and increase your knowledge.
This is great advice. I’ve found that this is the one thing social media is really good for. You can leave comments on blogs and interact with people on LinkedIn. There are many other resources out there.

10 Smart Tips for Project Management Success

Guest Post by Leam H.
When I’m job searching, I follow my own advice. I am currently trying to switch jobs, careers, or locations. Oddly, I was accused by someone of calling them a “Welfare ****”” when I gave my advice. The individual seemed to believe that her experience and age were beyond the scope of these recommendations. Her mind didn’t seem to be changed by the fact that I was older and had more experience.
Know that books are far more effective than webinars, seminars, and any other talking head I have ever met. While there are many great speakers and videos, they are only introductions to the book for me.
Nevertheless, I’m following this advice.
1.?Integrate the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. It is important to start with the end in your mind.
2.?Some recent version by Richard Bolles of “What colour is your parachute?” You can look at transferable skills as an alternative to being stuck in a rut.
3.?Prayer, Introspection. God can speak to me if I just shut up and listen.
4.?Find supporting, positive, people. I have a network of former co-workers and friends that I can call for support when I am struggling to find a job.
5.?Recommend people to?LinkedIn. Don’t be shy about asking for recommendations. Sometimes I feel really down and I reread the positive comments of others about my contribution to society.
6.?Live a full life. Have a hobby or another distraction. The book “Flow” is available at the bookstore. It’s a good book. The short version is that we feel most joyful when we do something that challenges us just a little. If you have the money, buy the book.
7.?Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters?website. Although I’m not convinced, they have some great ideas. You can also download the CD free of charge. I also have the book version of “Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters”, which you can download here.
8.?Help others. This is just one idea from GM4JH. You can skip the networking event and instead write a tutorial or code that solves a problem. Share the tutorial or code.
9.?Once you have your web presence/portfolio/resume on line, go read blogs on topics you are passionate about. Comment constructively. “Way cool!” Does not count. It could be something like, “This works well for the Aqueduct project. Thank you So and So, for your thoughts. Have you ever tried this with XYZ? Your web presence should be positive, professional, and helpful.
10.? Josh Kauffman’s “The Personal MBA” is for you if you are a geek. He makes business seem simple and explains how to get your geek ideas accepted into business. Josh has experienced some personal setbacks from wildfires in the west.
Bonus Tip: Avoid processed sugar. Depression is often associated with job searches. Processed sugar can make the condition worse.
Double Bonus Tip:?Accept being loved. You can be made to doubt your worth and your self-image by looking for work. Your heart can be kept healthy by a supportive spouse and a loyal dog (or two).
